Overview of the Fleischmann 218 model
The Fleischmann DB class 218 was introduced in the early 1980's and for a long time it was the best HO model of a 218 on the market. Roco released a new model in 2012 and that changed the standard again, but still the Fleischmann model is a still a great model.
The model is still build around the classic Fleischmann round motor that powers one truck/bogie. Unlike other similar style motors (e.g. Lima) this motor can be run pretty quiet and especially with modern DCC control can be run very smoothly. The older models don't have any provision of DCC (digital). Later models had a NEM 652 connector or even sound installed. This particular model, catalog no 4233, with number 281 413-3, was on the market from 1992 to 1994 and still has the very classic build.
DCC/Sound Install
This shows the model with all the old wiring removed. It also shows the very basic layout of the classic Fleischmann models. The motor truck on the left, a large mass in the middle and then a lot of empty space above the other truck.
Two strips of Evergreen styreen are placed already that form the base for the speaker and decoder. Because of the space we aim for a large speaker setup.
The motor shield has to be modified. By default the frame isn't isolated and one of the motor connections is connected to the frame. Fleischmann sells new motor shields but a quick run with a dremel tool (seen on the left) is sufficient as well.
The completed installation using the following parts:
- ESU large dual speaker from set 50340
- ESU 21 MTC adaptor board
- ESU Loksound 5 DCC decoder
- TCS KA1 - keep alive
A view from the other side which shows the two sugar cube speakers in the large 20x40mm baffle.
I used a TCS keep-alive because I had that available, I installed a small connector so I can disconnect it while programming. The ESU powerpacks don't have this programming issue and I will likely replace the TCS with an ESU powerpack soon. I also kept the original lights but will replace that with LEDs at some time as well.
