Overview of the Baureihe 111 and the Fleischmann model

The German class 111 was introduced in 1974 and was a further development of the class 110. Part of the serie was used for the S-Bahn in the Rhein-Ruhr area and had the S-Bahn colors of orange/beige. The photos show the 111 127 in Düsseldorf in 1996 and the Fleischmann model.

The Fleischmann model was introduced in 1985 and is still a very class Fleischmann model with the typical round motor. It obviously pre-dates DCC and this page is about converting the DC model to DCC.

The model is the 111 188-9, which was built in 1983 and came into service in the orange S-Bahn colors. In 2002 it got the new red colors and is still in serice.

DCC Install

The Fleischmann 4349 model in its box. As this installation was done for a friend, and he supplied the decoder, therefore a Digitrax DH126D decoder will be used.
After removing the shelf, we can look at the internals of the locomotive and its wiring. There is obviously a lot of space for the decoder. All the wiring will be replaced.
As with most Fleischmann models, we start with the motor. The older Fleischmann models have a standard round motor and the motor shield (that holds the brushes) is not electrically isolated properly.
With a sharpie we trace what carvings need to be made. The second photo shows that the brush holder is now properly isolated from the rest of the shield. This was done with a dremel tool.
The decoder is placed with double sided tape. As stated before all the wiring will be redone.
The wiring is done. The first photo shows the wiring during the process. First the motor control is connected, so we can test it. This means the red and black wire to the wheels and the orange and grey wires to the motor. After that the lights are done.

After this, the shell can be placed back and the locomotive is ready for service.
