Overview of the Fleischmann 01 164 model
The baureihe (class) 01 was an express train steam locomotive, introduced in the 1930's and used well into the 1970's.
This particular model is Fleischman 4169 and is a model of the 01 164. The 01 164 was built in late 1935. It was in service by the Deutsche Bundesbahn until 1977. Today it is a museum locomotive.
The Fleischmann model is from 1987 and pre-dates DCC.
DCC Install
Taking the shell of the tender and doing some basic placement tests of the decoder. I taped it down and then put the shell back on and see whether it all fitted. The decoder that is being used is the ESU Lokpilot 5 DCC decoder and a small 8 pin connector is used for the decoder.
The tender has the standard Fleischmann round motor. The motor shield is one of the later versions and to isolate it for DCC use only the small trace just above the left screw needs to be removed.
The front light has been replaced by an LED and the resistor can be seen near the smoke stack. It is wrapped in black shrink wrap. The wires of the front LED and the wheel pickup are run through the path that was originally used by the old wiring. I used a red piece of shrink wrap to guide the four wires between the locomotive and the tender.
In the tender all the wires are placed and now they all need to be connected to the 8-pin connector.
The tender wiring is now complete. A small LaisDCC 8-pin connector board has been placed in the rear of the tender. All the wires are connected. The decoder is ready to be installed.
This shows a detailed view of the tender wiring, before and after the decoder is placed. The decoder is mounted on top of the motor and weight block using some double sided tape.
Now the locomotive is ready for re-assembly.
