Description of the Cmdo type 9
During the Second World War various trains from the German Railways (German Reichsbahn) were used in Norway and were left behind after the war ended in May 1945. This included 5 motor cars of the WUMAG type VT 137 (BC4vT 32-34). After the war they were classified as NSB Cmdo type 8 with numbers 18290-18294. In May 1946 the type classification was changed to Cmdo type 9. In the Norwegian classification Cmdo means: C (3rd class), m (motor car), d (diesel) and o (car with trucks). The heritage of the 5 motor cars is as follows:
German no | Norwegian no | Builder |
---|---|---|
137 041 | 18 290 | Wumag |
137 123 | 18 291 | Dessau |
137 124 | 18 292 | Dessau |
137 134 | 18 293 | Talbot |
137 135 | 18 294 | Danzig |
The overall condition of these motor cars was bad and very quickly the 18290 and 18294 were set aside and officially retired in 1953. The 18291 was never put in service and was retired in 1953 as well.
The Maybach engines of the two other motor cars (18292, 18293) were rebuild (by Maybach). These two cars were put in service on the Valdresbanen and Skreiabanen. The depot was Dokka from where they made a run to Skreia and back.
In March 1955 the 18292 was out of service as the engine was sent to Trondheim for revision. The overall condition of the 18292 was bad and therefore was retired in July 1955. Parts were used to service the 18293 and because of this the 18293 was kept in service until the summer of 1956. It was then retired and both were scrapped in 1958.
