Introduction tot the prototype

The Di3.643 was built in 1958 and was a NOHAB demo for the Finnish railways. It was bought by the NSB in 1960. It has seen all the various liveries, green, gammel design, mellom design and ny design. In late 1986 during a revision the nose lights were removed. Then in 1991 cab 1 was isolated and it got the new panser glass in cab 1. The glass has the newer frame around it.

This photo shows the Di3.643 in Røros with train 301 on June 24 1996.

The Di3.642 was built in 1959 and has been in service since 1960. It came into service in the green color. In 1986 it get the new red color. Around 1990/1991 cab 1 was isolated and it got the new panser glass in cab 1.

This photo, from Stig Baumeyer, shows the Di3.642 in ny design but before cab 1 got isolated. This is between 1986 and 1990/91.

Models of the Di3.642 and Di3.643

Bergen Modelljernbane made a series of special Di3 models under the name "Di3 Spesial". In 2005 I was able to get the special version of the Di3.643. This version is a model of the Di3.643 in ny design (the modern red color), isolated cab and without the nose head light. It has the wrong window frame though.
In the photo two versions of the Di3.642 can be seen. Both are the original Heljan model, one has been weathered (by NMJ). The Di3.641 is a model that I created, see Heljan Di3.641 nydesign (renumber/DCC). It shows the Di3.641 in ny design but before it got the new glass in cab 1.

The idea of this project is to use the windows from one of the Di3.642 for the Di3.643 and make a version of the Di3.642 that is similar to the Di3.641.

These three photos show the steps. From both models the windows are being removed. The new panser (hardend) glass is moved to the Di3.643. The Di3.642 gets the standard windows and the typicall norwegian gitter (steel bars in front of the windows).

The end result. The Di3.641 and 642 (left) are models for the late 1980's. The Di3.642 and Di3.643 (right) are models for the 1990's.
