Introduction

The class 210 and 219 locomotives were diesel locomotives with a gas turbine as an additional drive. The 219 was built in 1965 as V169 001. It has a gas turbine (General Electric, built under license by KHD). It demonstrated that the gas turbine concept would work and resulted in an additional order of eight locomotives class 210. The 210 had military grade turbines that were also used in helicopters.
The 219 was soon migrated to freight service with the turbine taken out of service. It was in used until late 1977. It went to a private company.
The class 210 were initially very successful. In 1978 a turbine failed and that resulted in all the units taken out of service. The class was rebuilt into class 218.9 and were in service until 2004/2006.
The first photo shows the 219 001-5 in Bremen, where it was stored out of service, in 1985. The second is from 1973, taken by Jan Oosterhuis, and shows two class 210 locomotives in Munich.
