Skd 224 background
In the second half of the 1970's the NSB was looking at another switching locomotive as many of the existing switchers were getting old. They placed an order by Gmeinder in German and 11 switchers were delivered in 1979. The series has a hydraulic power transmission, powered by a Cummins T 1150 L diesel. They can run in multiple traction.
The Skd 224 was/is mostly used in freight service but on the Arendal line it was used for passenger service as well.
Most of the Skd 224 switchers are still around and are in service by either CargoNet, RailCombi or BaneNor.
Models
In HO only Skaladesign and NMJ have made models of the Skd 224. Skaladesign had a kit but the NMJ model as part of their topline series. I have a few NMJ models.
